What it measures

Indian reports use µg/dL; µmol/L is the international form. Serum iron swings substantially through the day and with recent meals, which makes a single reading a poor measure of iron stores on its own — it is read with TIBC and ferritin, which are steadier, rather than alone.

Reading it in a different unit
